Poland international goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has amicably terminated his contract with Juventus and is considering retirement.
Juventus’ website confirmed the termination of Szczesny’s contract was at the request of the 34-year-old goalkeeper after seven seasons together, with a contract at the Allianz Stadium until June 2025.
“Thank you for everything ‘Tek’ and good luck for the future,” the Bianconeri wrote.Juventus were originally planning to sell Szczesny for the right price. But a move to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr was scrappe and, despite interest from mid-tier Serie A clubs,
It appears the Poland international is making a family decision about hanging up his gloves and retiring from professional football.Szczesny has made 252 appearances for Juventus and is one of seven foreign players to have reached 200 Serie A appearances for the Bianconeri, but a change of manager, with Thiago Motta and the arrival of Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, means the 34-year-old will miss the final year of his current deal.
For Juventus, the problem was Szczesny’s high salary, which according to Italian media is around seven million euros per year. The Pole’s contract runs until July 2025. However, both parties reached an agreement to terminate the contract before the start of this season.
“I really believe in loyalty and fulfilling contracts. I never forced any transfer. But loyalty for me is also such a situation that if the club that gave you a lot needs to break the terms of the contract and needs your help, then you are also able to help,” Szczesny was quoted as saying by Polish media “Foot Truck” on Wednesday.
